Understanding Breast Implant Illness (BII)

Breast augmentation remains one of the most popular cosmetic procedures worldwide. While the majority of women are satisfied with their results, some report a range of symptoms post-surgery, collectively referred to as Breast Implant Illness (BII). At PekoMD in Toledo, our patients’ safety and well-being are our top priorities. This is why we’re committed to helping those who believe they are suffering from BII and are considering implant removal.

What is Breast Implant Illness (BII)?

Breast Implant Illness is not a medically recognized disease, but rather a term used by some to describe a constellation of symptoms they attribute to their breast implants. These symptoms can include:

  • Fatigue
  • Cognitive dysfunction (like memory loss or difficulty concentrating)
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Hair loss
  • Chronic pain
  • Autoimmune-like symptoms
  • Rashes or skin problems
  • Sleep disturbances

The exact cause of these symptoms remains a subject of debate and research. There is not yet conclusive evidence linking them directly to breast implants. However, an increasing number of women believe their implants to be the root cause and seek removal as a solution.

Exploring Implant Removal at PekoMD

At PekoMD, we recognize the concerns surrounding BII. Regardless of whether BII is directly linked to implants, we believe in respecting our patients’ experiences and providing solutions to alleviate their symptoms.

  • Consultation: Every patient’s journey begins with a comprehensive consultation. We’ll discuss your symptoms, your health history, and your desired outcomes. This is the time to ask questions and voice any concerns.
  • En-bloc Capsulectomy: This is a procedure where the breast implant and the surrounding scar tissue (capsule) are removed together. It’s favored by many patients because it ensures that the entire capsule, which may have potential contaminants, is removed.
  • Total Capsulectomy: In this procedure, the breast implant and the capsule are removed, but not necessarily as one piece. The entire scar tissue is removed from the chest wall.
  • Implant Removal without Capsulectomy: Some patients may opt to have only the implant removed without the surrounding capsule.
  • Breast Lift or Fat Grafting: Following implant removal, some women might opt for additional procedures like a breast lift or fat grafting to restore natural breast volume and shape.

The recovery process after implant removal is often comparable to or shorter than the initial augmentation procedure. Our dedicated team at PekoMD provides tailored aftercare instructions and support to ensure a smooth recovery.

I highly recommend pēkomd®, especially if it’s your first time at a cosmetic place like this, if you’re not sure what you want, or you’re a little nervous. (I was all three)! Lol I was a little nervous going into a place like this for the first time. I didn’t know what to expect. From the moment you walk in to pēkomd®, you are treated like VIP. The staff is so kind and welcoming. When I explained what it is that I wanted fixed, they possessed a wealth of knowledge, and explained in detail, what my options were to help me achieve my goals. I’m looking forward to my next visit!
