Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is something worth considering if you are unhappy with tweezing, shaving, or waxing for removing unwanted hair. This is a commonly done aesthetic procedure in the United States. It involves the beaming concentrated light for the purpose of damaging hair. Pigment in the hair follicles absorbs light that destroys the hair.
pēkomd® Cosmetic Surgery, led by board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Peter Koltz, provides laser hair removal treatments to patients in Toledo, Maumee, Northwest Ohio, Southeastern Michigan, and surrounding communities.
Advantages of Laser Hair Removal
Lasers can be helpful in removing unwanted hair from the leg, face, back, arm, chin, bikini line, and underarm among other areas. Benefits include:
- Precision: You can selectively target coarse and dark hair while leaving the surrounding skin untouched.
- Speed: Laser pulses take fraction of seconds for treating several hairs at once. Approximately, the size of a quarter can be treated every second. Upper lips and other small areas can be treated in less than 60 seconds. Larger areas, like the legs or back may require up to an hour.
- Predictable: You should experience permanent hair loss after about 3 to 7 sessions.
Laser Hair Removal Procedure
The hair undergoing treatment will be trimmed to a few millimeters right before the procedure. Topical numbing medication may be applied 20 to 30 minutes before the procedure to make you comfortable. The treatment provider will adjust the laser equipment as per the thickness, color and location of the hair being treated in addition to the skin color.
You and the technician would need appropriate eye protection depending on the light or laser source used. You will also need to use a special cooling device or a cold gel for protecting the outer skin layers. This will help the laser light to penetrate your skin.
The technician will next emit a light pulse at the treatment area. They will observe the area for a few minutes to ensure they are using the best settings.
You will be provided with ice packs, cold water, and inflammatory lotions or creams when the procedure is done for easing discomfort. Your treatment provider will ask you to come back after 4 to 6 weeks or until your hair stops growing back.
Post-op Recovery
The treated area may feel and appear sunburned for 24 to 48 hours following the procedure. Moisturizers and cool compresses may be helpful. You should be able to wear makeup the next day unless your face was treated or the skin is blistering.
The treated hair will continue falling out over the next month. Make sure you wear sunscreen for preventing any temporary changes in the skin tone and color.
Results
Repeated treatments are recommended for best results because hair loss and growth occur in a cycle naturally. Laser treatments are most beneficial in the new-growth stage. Also, results can differ between two patients. Laser hair removal results can last for several months to years.
