Balancing and Supporting the Outer Eyelid

The muscles around the eyes help maintain your eye shape, allowing you to express emotion and show your personality. When these muscles weaken, the eye may appear droopy, rounded, or irritated, affecting your overall facial balance. Our canthoplasties are designed to strengthen and reposition the outer eyelid muscles while carefully lifting your eyes.

What Is a Canthoplasty?

A canthoplasty, sometimes called a fox eye lift, is a surgical procedure that carefully tightens and adjusts the outer corner of the eyelid, known as the lateral canthus. With this procedure, we can reconstruct your upper eyelid, giving it a slightly tilted shape to create a lifted appearance.

While every patient has their own motivations for seeking a canthoplasty, many patients opt for this procedure to address the following concerns:

  • Sagging upper eyelids
  • Downward eyelid tilt
  • Asymmetrical eyelids
  • Limited field of vision
  • Eye irritation caused by poor eyelid muscle support
  • Dissatisfaction with the shape of the eye

What to Expect From Your Canthoplasty

Careful Eyelid Evaluations

Every patient’s journey with pēkomd® starts with a private consultation with our medical team. There, you’ll discuss your aesthetic goals, medical history, and surgical concerns, and your surgeon will examine your eyelid structure, muscle strength, and eye shape to determine whether a canthoplasty is right for you.

Personalized Surgical Planning

Here, no two procedures are alike. Once we’ve confirmed your eligibility for a canthoplasty, our team will begin building your customized surgical plan. We’ll tailor our approach to restore your eyelid stability and enhance your eye shape while preserving your natural expression.

Strengthening the Lateral Canthus

During surgery, your surgeon will carefully tighten and reposition the lateral canthus at the outer corner of the eyelid. We work with precision to restore vital muscle support, helping prevent future sagging and improving the eyelid’s ability to maintain contact with the eye surface.

Combining Function With Beauty

Depending on your needs and aesthetic goals, our canthoplasties can target medical concerns, cosmetic dissatisfaction, or both. Our approaches protect your existing eye structure, ensuring the other muscles, nerves, and tendons are unaltered by our work and fit seamlessly with your new eye shape.

Recovering From Your Canthoplasty

Recovery after a canthoplasty typically involves mild swelling and bruising around the eyes, which should fade within two weeks. You’ll need to keep your head elevated during recovery to help reduce swelling and protect your eyes from extra strain. Cold compresses can help keep you comfortable as swelling fades, and you may wear specialized glasses to limit light exposure and irritation. You’ll head home from our Ohio clinic with an extensive list of aftercare instructions, including the following items:

  • Incision site care and cleaning protocols
  • Skin care guidance
  • Hygiene recommendations
  • Sleep position restrictions
  • Activity limitations
  • Protective lens guidelines
  • Pain management strategies, if needed

Most patients return to normal activities, including desk work, light walking, and driving, within one week. You may need to hold off on strenuous exercise, including prolonged stretching and heavy lifting, for several weeks as you heal. In the weeks after your surgery, you’ll return to our office for follow-up visits with our team, allowing your surgeon to monitor your healing progress, remove any remaining sutures, and approve your return to impactful activities.

Lifting the Eyes to Lift Your Confidence

The final results of your canthoplasty will reveal themselves as residual swelling subsides, which may take several weeks. Over time, you’ll notice a more refreshed look to your eyes, and your eyelids will be stronger and less prone to drooping. Many of our Ohio patients count their canthoplasty as a key factor in revitalizing their confidence at home, with friends, and at the office.

FAQ Canthoplasty

How long will my canthoplasty take?

Most canthoplasties take between one and two hours, depending on the surgical complexity. During your consultation, our team will share realistic expectations so you can plan accordingly.

Can a canthoplasty be combined with other eye surgeries?

Yes. It’s possible to combine a canthoplasty with a blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) to further smooth the eyelids and remove excess skin. If you’d like to explore your eyelid surgery options, ask our team for more information during your consultation.

How long will my results last?

Results from your canthoplasty are designed to be long-lasting, helping the lateral canthus stay supported for years to come. Aging will continue naturally, and you may opt for a different eyelid surgery to remove loose skin in the future.

Will a canthoplasty drastically change my eye shape?

No. At pēkomd®, we’re focused on subtle, natural-looking enhancements that keep you looking like yourself. All eye shape changes will feel authentic and align with your natural features.
