Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures to enhance the shape and size of a woman’s breasts through surgical insertion of implants. Commonly known as breast implants surgery, this procedure is primarily performed to create a more voluptuous and attractive figure.
In some cases, breast implants are used to correct asymmetry between the breasts, add volume to naturally small breasts, or restore the breast appearance following a mastectomy. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Peter Koltz provides breast augmentation to patients in Toledo, Maumee, Northwest Ohio, Southeastern Michigan, and surrounding locations.
Customizable Surgery
Breast augmentation is one of the more customizable plastic surgery procedures that can be tailored to your specific requirements. At your pre-operative consultation, your surgeon will discuss the following options to prepare a customized breast augmentation surgery plan:
- Implant Type: You can choose between silicone gel, saline filled, and ultra cohesive or gummy bear breast implants. The implants are generally available in sizes from 110 cc to 900 cc, and in different shapes, sizes, and texture.
- Implant Placement: Your surgeon will evaluate your breast anatomy and personal goals to recommend the appropriate implant placement in the breast tissue. Breast implants can be placed either subglandularly (in front of the pectoralis muscle) or submuscularly (below the pectoralis muscle).
- Incision Placement: Incision options for implant insertion include under the breast crease (inframammary incision), along the lower border of areola (periareolar incision), or in the arm pit (transaxillary incision). In rare cases, the implants may also be placed through the belly button (TUBA incision).
Surgical Procedure
Following general anesthesia, your surgeon will begin the breast implant cosmetic surgery procedure by placing an incision in the pre-determined location. A skilled surgeon will be able to create a smaller incision in a relatively concealed location so that any subsequent scarring in minimally visible.
Through the incision, your surgeon will create a breast pocket to accommodate the implant. Once the implant is placed and adjusted into the right position, they will carefully close the incision with removable or dissolvable sutures. Thereafter, they will wrap the breasts in bandages before you are brought out of anesthesia and sent to a recovery room.
Post-Op Recovery
Your breast augmentation surgery may be performed as an outpatient procedure, so you will return home the same day. You will need at least a week to 10 days for initial recovery, after which you may resume your regular daily routine or return to your workplace. If you have had a submuscular implant placement, the recovery time may be slightly longer than that of a subglandular implant placement.
Benefits of a Breast Augmentation Surgery
A proportional, aesthetically appealing figure is the foremost benefit most women seek from their breast augmentation surgery. You can wear the clothes of your choice and flaunt your body without feeling self-conscious about your breast size.
Indirect benefits include improved self-confidence and self-esteem, which can do wonders for your personal, social and professional life. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Peter Koltz receives patients from Toledo, Maumee, Northwest Ohio, Southeastern Michigan, and nearby areas for breast enhancement procedures.
