Reasons for Ear Surgery

Ear surgery, clinically referred to as otoplasty or auricular surgery, can address a wide range of concerns—ranging from cosmetic dissatisfaction to functional or reconstructive needs. Some patients wish to correct protruding ears that stand out more than they'd like, while others seek to repair torn earlobes resulting from heavy earrings or accidental pulls. Congenital abnormalities or injuries can also distort the ear's shape or position, affecting self-esteem and daily comfort. Through targeted surgical techniques, ear surgery in Toledo can help restore symmetry, enhance proportion, and reduce discomfort—making everyday activities and wearing headgear or earrings more comfortable. Our approach at pēkomd® starts with a thorough conversation about what motivates you to pursue treatment. This helps us gauge the best method—whether that's pinning, lobe repair, reconstructive surgery, or a blend of these options—to match your vision and anatomical requirements.

Types of Ear Surgery

A variety of procedures fall under the umbrella of ear surgery, each designed to address different cosmetic or structural challenges. We offer all of the following procedures at our Toledo clinic:

Ear Pinning (Otoplasty)

Ear pinning repositions protruding ears closer to the head, reducing the “winged” look. Through a small incision, your surgeon reshapes or secures cartilage so that it sits in a more balanced position relative to the scalp.

Torn Earlobe Repair

Earlobes can tear because of accidents, heavy jewelry, or prolonged stretching. Torn earlobe repair stitches the split tissues back together, improving both comfort and appearance for daily life or wearing earrings again.

Earlobe Reduction

Overly large or stretched earlobes can draw attention away from other features. Earlobe reduction gently removes excess tissue and reshapes the remaining lobe for an unobtrusive, proportionate look.

Ear Trauma Surgery

Traumatic injuries—like lacerations or lost tissue—can lead to permanent ear deformities if untreated. Ear trauma surgery uses reconstructive methods to rebuild damaged areas, restoring an ear shape that's as close to your original anatomy as possible.

Microtia Surgery

Microtia describes a congenital condition where the external ear is malformed or absent. Microtia surgery reconstructs the ear structure using advanced techniques, giving the patient a more typical ear shape and potentially improved hearing function, depending on the procedure.

What to Expect During Your Ear Surgery at pēkomd

Before proceeding with an operation, you'll consult with a board-certified provider at one of our accredited Toledo offices. Here, we'll gather details about your medical background, your concerns (like ear shape or damaged lobes), and your specific hopes for the surgery. That discussion influences our choice of procedure—whether it's ear pinning, reconstructive repair, or another targeted technique. On the day of surgery, you'll arrive at our state-of-the-art facility, where patient safety and comfort govern every step.

Depending on the complexity of your procedure, local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia may be used. Through minimal incisions placed behind the ear or near natural creases, your surgeon reshapes or removes cartilage and skin to refine the ear's structure. For torn lobe or microtia surgeries, the focus might be on precise tissue repair and reconstruction. Once complete, you'll move to a brief recovery period, and our team will provide guidance on incision care and activity limitations. The objective is a smooth experience that aligns with your expectations from start to finish.

Recovering After Your Ear Surgery

Recovery often depends on the type and extent of ear surgery performed. Mild swelling, bruising, and soreness are normal in the initial days. You may receive instructions to wear specialized bandages or a protective headband to maintain the ears' new position or shield them from accidental bumps. Pain medication or cold compresses may alleviate discomfort, and gentle care of any incisions helps avoid complications. While many patients return to light tasks or desk work within about a week, it's wise to hold off on rigorous exercise or contact sports until your surgeon deems it safe—often a few more weeks. Some minor swelling can persist for a while, but it typically reduces over time, allowing you to see your ears' improved contour. By following the aftercare plan, you set the stage for a rewarding outcome that harmonizes with your facial features and fosters renewed confidence.

Dr. Straka is very personable, professional, and earned my trust right away!

My daughter first had some work done a few years ago with Dr. Straka. Of course she was/is a beautiful girl in every way, but this definitely enhanced things for her. I inherited the worst bags you could ever imagine. Getting older I thought let me do something for me! I scheduled a consult and I am truly sad that I had not gone sooner.

Dr. Straka is very personable, professional, and earned my trust right away! I am only 10 days post op and I love my new look already! Cristina has been very attentive from day one. I am still being checked on today. Dr. Straka is doing great things at pekomd! I highly recommend him to anyone!!!!!!! He gets a 100 stars

I would say Dr. Markov is a bit of a perfectionist.

After learning I had breast cancer a second time in 2023 I opted to have a bilateral mastectomy with a DIEP flap reconstruction. I looked into 3 different doctors and while I am sure they are all very capable, I chose Dr. Markov. He was straight forward and to the point and he was local. I really liked his approach and he made me feel very comfortable. Today I had my 4 week post op appointment from the final phase of the reconstruction and I am thrilled with the results. I feel and look like myself again. Honestly they look better than they did before my mastectomy. I would say Dr. Markov is a bit of a perfectionist. The only thing left, if I opt to do this, is the tattooing. I am not sure if I am going to do that just yet, because they already look so good. Anyhow, I would 100 % recommend Dr. Markov.

Are You an Ideal Candidate for Ear Surgery in Toledo?

Ear surgery can benefit those who feel self-conscious about ears that are too large, protrude, have torn lobes, or are malformed due to injury or congenital factors. Ideal candidates are often in general good health, hold realistic expectations about recovery, and have specific aesthetic or functional concerns they wish to address. This includes children (usually age five or older) whose ear structures have developed enough for surgical adjustment, as well as adults seeking correction for long-standing issues. During your consultation at pēkomd®, we'll examine your ear anatomy, discuss your medical and surgical history, and identify whether ear surgery aligns with your broader goals. If another approach—like non-surgical techniques or a different aesthetic procedure—would be more suitable, our board-certified providers will recommend it with transparency and integrity.

Ear Surgery Frequently Asked Questions

Ready to address ear concerns that affect your comfort or confidence? Contact pēkomd® now to schedule a consultation for ear surgery in Toledo and rediscover the freedom of balanced, naturally shaped ears.

Will ear surgery impact my hearing?

Ear surgery mainly changes external structures, so it typically does not affect hearing. If any hearing issues exist, we can refer you to additional specialists as needed.

Are scars easily visible after ear surgery?

Our surgeons place incisions in natural folds or behind the ear whenever possible, helping keep scars discreet. Over time, scars usually fade significantly with proper care.

Can ear surgery be combined with other facial procedures?

Yes. Many individuals combine ear surgery with complementary treatments—like facelifts or rhinoplasty—to achieve a broader enhancement in a single session.

How soon can children undergo ear pinning?

Children's ears reach a developmental stage sufficient for surgery around age five or six, which can help reduce social difficulties tied to prominent ears.

What if my earlobes are both torn and stretched?

We can address multiple issues within a single procedure, repairing tears while reducing excess tissue for a harmonious, proportional look.
