What Is a Mommy Makeover?
A mommy makeover is a popular combination of plastic surgery techniques available today. It is devised specifically to address common issues faced by women who have experienced pregnancy and breastfeeding.
A mommy makeover is usually performed as a single procedure, and the techniques used depend on which areas of the body you would like to rejuvinate. You have several options depending on your specific goals. You should consider whether or not you desire larger or firmer breasts, a tighter tummy, vaginal improvements, or buttock or hip augmentation. Your goals will determine the type of restoration, the type of implants used, placement of fat transfer and the placement of any necessary incisions.
Depending on the patient and the treatment plan, a mommy makeover can include the following:
- Buttock augmentation
- Buttock lift
- Upper back lift
- Arm or thigh lift
- Breast augmentation
- Breast lift or tightening
- Vaginal improvements
- Fat transfer
The breasts and abdomen are the most common areas that change with being a mom, and a mommy makeover will often center around the breasts and abdomen. During pregnancy, the abdominal muscles stretch as the baby grows, and after delivery, the muscles may not recover their tighter, pre-pregnancy appearance. This will commonly result in a separation of the abdominal muscles or rectus diastasis. This causes the lower abdominal “pooch” that is often not able to be corrected with diet or exercise.
Breast augmentation or a breast lift can also be included in a mommy makeover, as well as a tummy tuck, liposuction, or a circumferential abdominoplasty, where Dr. Koltz will make a longer incision and remove excess skin from below the abdomen while lifting the hips, thighs, and buttocks. A mommy makeover can also include breast implants to restore fullness and lost volume or a breast lift to correct sagging skin. For those with large and uncomfortable breasts, breast reduction surgery can help.
What Happens During a Mommy Makeover?
The mommy makeover will be performed as outpatient surgery at pēkoMD’s cosmetic facility or at a hospital if necessary, and you will be allowed to recover at home. Out of town guests will recover with special arrangements in a nearby hotel with Dr Koltz and his nurse visiting you until you are ready to return home. You will be able to return to all normal activities by 6 weeks after surgery in most instances but usually will be ready for most activities 1 to 2 weeks later. You may experience some soreness, bruising, or swelling after the surgery, but Dr. Koltz can prescribe the necessary medications for a pain-free recovery. Dr Koltz has developed a rapid recovery protocol for his cosmetic surgery patients which involves addressing pain from multiple modalities and frequently enables patients to not need any pain medication after surgery! While mommy makeover results can be immediate, the full effects may not be visible until the swelling has gone down, which may take up to six months or longer, depending on the procedure. It is best to avoid intense exercise and lifting heavy objects, including babies over ten pounds, for at least two to six weeks after the mommy makeover.
